Artist
As a three-dimensional, visual, conceptual artist, and art educator, I seek to contribute to ongoing discourse surrounding key social issues. The artistic creation process is focused on education throughout all levels of my work, regardless of the subject under investigation. I learn through research, through the co-creation process I engage in with the materials, tools, and space, through participant interaction— and focus the end results on how I can share my own learning and knowledge with the audience.
The aim of my work is not to seek out social justice, but to enact meaningful change within each audience member by creating reflective spaces where the viewer can confront their own views of the topic and begin to consider the perspectives and experiences of others. While the artistic creation process is highly personal, it is equally personal to the viewer. Within my work, I try to remain aware of the needs of the subjects and of the viewers and to create a space in which everyone can approach the work with an open mind. This allows the audience to challenge and shift their own preconceived notions taught to them, often unknowingly, and generate knowledge sharing that can be shared with others to create the foundation for lasting social change.
